Amsler’s Grid

1. Keep in a place where you will notice every day, such as on the refrigerator.

2. Cover one eye and look at the center dot. Use the diagonal lines to help direct your focus to the central dot. Make sure to not let your eye wander – you must keep looking at the center of the grid. The test only works if it is done with one eye at a time. The covered eye must be completely covered.

3. Adjust the distance from your eye to the grid for good focus. If you have bifocals, use the strongest area of them.

4. Check to make sure all 4 sides of the grid are visible in your peripheral vision.

5. View the other lines in your peripheral vision and note any wavy areas, distortion, missing patches or cloudy areas.

6. Cover the opposite eye and repeat steps 3 through 5.

7. The primary goal of this test is to look for and be aware of any changes that occur. The test will make it obvious to you if there is a change so that you can let us know as soon as possible.

8. The test should only take a few seconds a day and could make a big difference in detecting a problem that needs treatment before it is too late.
